Great post—a topic that has been on my mind lately.
I tend to think that without beauty, there would be little reward for the mathematician or physicist to discover more elegant equations. I would say the strange notion that beauty is merely some subjective human projection makes a mystery of the inner workings of science itself. Perhaps beauty lies at the heart of intelligibility.
Enjoyed the paintings! Brought back some memories…I was in Venice for only one day and was sick, but I still found it enchanting, despite the bad food and tourists. (But the food was probably second only to British food in badness.)
