Quantum Indeterminism, Free Will, and Self-Causation
No, indeterminism does not threaten your free will.
I'm excited to announce the publication of my paper in the Journal of Consciousness Studies!
“Quantum Indeterminism, Free Will, and Self-Causation”
Several philosophers and scientists, who mull over whether we have free will, invoke the "randomness objection": Randomness does not confer freedom but rather can only lead to erratic behavior. Forget quantum indeterminism, is the narrative, it doesn't help to 'make you free.' Sounds reasonable, doesn’t it?
I show that this is a typical misunderstanding of what 'randomness' means in science and that there is neither a logical incoherence nor any inconsistency with quantum physics by taking a 'quantum-libertarian’ approach.
On the contrary, interpreting quantum indeterminism as 'potentiality', 'self-determination', or 'self-causation' is precisely what is required for free will, in an otherwise deterministic and mechanistic universe.
Check out my paper and you will find out why.
